The findings from this combined approach—drawing on coroner’s reports and the community reporting form—offer a more human-centered understanding of the realities faced by those who die in the context of homelessness. These results help better document trends, reduce gaps in knowledge surrounding homelessness-related mortality, and enable more effective prevention of avoidable deaths.

Deaths occurring in situations of homelessness reflect a form of systemic exclusion, demonstrating that institutions do not always succeed in meeting the fundamental needs of people experiencing homelessness. The results thus help improve our understanding in order to better design more targeted and effective intervention measures.

It is important to note that the number of deaths recorded in this study does not represent all deaths that occurred in contexts of homelessness. Rather, this initiative aims to highlight the systemic inequalities affecting people experiencing homelessness.
